🇩🇪 Bahnanbindung des Flughafens SWF 

Mit der Wiederaufnahme des internationalen Flugverkehrs am kleinen Hudson Valley Airport: Stewart International Airport SWF, wird nun auch wieder diskutiert, ob es Sinn macht, den kleinen Flughafen per Schiene an die Stadt anzubinden. [1]

Im Moment ist man auf einen Bus angewiesen, der direkt vom Terminal bis zum Times Square auf Manhattan fährt. Allerdings nur einmal am Tag, wenn ein internationaler Flug landet/startet. Zu den anderen Verbindungen nach Florida, South Carolina und Georgia gibt es keine anderen Zubringer als das Auto.

Vor mehr als 12 Jahre gab es erste Ideen [5], ein Gleis von der "West of Hudson Metro-North Railroad" - auch als "Port Jervis Line" bekannt, vom Bahnhof "Salisbury Mills" direkt zum Flughafen zu bauen. Man hat sich aber zu Gunsten des Busses entschieden, da der schneller und günstiger ist (war?) [3].  

Vom Bahnhof bis zum Flughafen müssten etwa 6 km neues Gleis verlegt werden um dann direkte (Express?) Züge bis nach Hoboken fahren zu lassen. Heute dauert eine Zugfahrt von Salisbury Mills bis Hoboken zwischen 90 und 100 Minuten [2]. So noch kein Vorteil zum Bus, der in der gleichen Zeit direkt nach Manhattan fährt.

Sind wir also gespannt was sich auf der "West of Hudson Metro-North Railroad" in den kommenden Jahren so tut und ob der Internationale Flugverkehr in den SWF überhaupt bestehen bleibt. 

🇺🇸 Rail access from SWF Airport to New York City 

With the resumption of international air traffic at the small Hudson Valley airport, Stewart International Airport (SWF), the discussion has once again emerged about whether it makes sense to connect the small airport to the city by rail. [1]

At the moment, travelers rely on a bus that runs directly from the terminal to Penn Station in Manhattan. However, it operates only once a day, and only when an international flight arrives or departs. For other connections — to Florida, South Carolina, and Georgia — the only option is by car.

More than 12 years ago, there were initial ideas [5] to build a rail spur from the “West of Hudson Metro-North Railroad,” also known as the “Port Jervis Line,” directly from Salisbury Mills station to the airport. But the decision was made in favor of the bus, since it was (or was?) faster and cheaper [3].

To connect the station to the airport, approximately 6 km of new track would need to be laid to allow direct (express?) trains to run to Hoboken. Currently, a train ride from Salisbury Mills to Hoboken takes between 90 and 100 minutes [2]. That’s not yet an advantage over the bus, which travels directly to Manhattan in about the same time.

So, let’s see what developments take place on the “West of Hudson Metro-North Railroad” in the coming years — and whether international air traffic at SWF will continue at all.
