Es gibt Momente beim Spotten, für die man einfach am richtigen Fleck stehen muss — und heute, am 22. September 2026, hat alles gepasst. Discover Airlines 4Y2105, ein Airbus A330-300 mit dem Kennzeichen D-AIKQ, direkt von Stewart (SWF) nach Frankfurt (FRA) — und ich habe sie in genau der Sekunde erwischt, in der sie am Ostende der Bahn 9/27, gleich an der Route 17K, abgehoben hat.

Ein bisschen Gegenlicht war dabei, aber dahinter stand eine herrliche Wolkenwand, vor der sie sich beim Steigflug richtig schön abhob. Dann zog sie Richtung Hudson River davon und verschwand hinter Stromleitungen und Baumwipfeln. Der Startmoment selbst ist für mich das Highlight dieses Posts — deshalb lasse ich diesmal das Video sprechen.

Dass diese Stewart–Frankfurt-Verbindung eine echte Rarität ist, habe ich ja schon in meinem Beitrag vom 8. September ausführlich beschrieben: nur eine Handvoll Mal im Jahr, als Charter für Kreuzfahrtgäste. Umso mehr freue ich mich, sie diesmal nicht nur im Steigflug über dem Tal, sondern direkt beim Abheben erwischt zu haben — und das genau im richtigen Augenblick.

There are moments in spotting where you simply have to be standing in the right spot — and today, September 22, 2026, everything lined up. Discover Airlines 4Y2105, an Airbus A330-300 registered D-AIKQ, departing Stewart (SWF) direct to Frankfurt (FRA) — and I caught her the very second she lifted off the east end of runway 9/27, right by Route 17K.

There was a touch of backlight, but behind her stood a gorgeous wall of cloud that she climbed out against beautifully. Then she pulled away toward the Hudson River and slipped off behind the power lines and treetops. The moment of rotation is, for me, the highlight of this post — so this time I'll let the video do the talking.

I already covered how rare this Stewart–Frankfurt run really is in my post from September 8: only a handful of times a year, as a charter for cruise passengers. Which makes me all the happier to have caught her this time not just climbing out over the valley, but at the very instant of liftoff — and at exactly the right moment.

🇩🇪  Neuer Anlauf zur Gewinnung weiterer Fluggesellschaften 

Mit einer neuen Initiative wollen die Verantwortlichen der Port Authority zusätzliche Fluggesellschaften für den Flughafen im Hudson Valley gewinnen. Ziel ist es, Stewart für Airlines attraktiver zu machen, die ihr Streckennetz ausbauen möchten.

Ein sogenanntes „Minimum Revenue Guarantee“-Programm (MRG) soll dabei helfen. Solche Programme werden an Regionalflughäfen in den USA häufig eingesetzt, um das finanzielle Risiko neuer Strecken zu verringern. Bleiben die Passagierzahlen in der Anlaufphase hinter den Erwartungen zurück, gleicht das Programm einen Teil der Einnahmeausfälle aus und gibt der Airline Zeit, die neue Verbindung am Markt zu etablieren.

Ziel ist es, Fluggesellschaften davon zu überzeugen, dass die Region genügend Nachfrage für zusätzliche Flugverbindungen bietet.

Derzeit wird Stewart Airport lediglich von Allegiant und Breeze Airways bedient, deren Angebot sich überwiegend auf Ziele in Florida konzentriert. Obwohl diese Verbindungen für die Region wichtig sind, wünschen sich viele Reisende seit Jahren ein breiteres Streckenangebot und die Rückkehr weiterer Fluggesellschaften.

Für die Fans des Flughafens markiert die neue Initiative ein weiteres Kapitel in der langen Geschichte von SWF. Ob das geplante Förderprogramm tatsächlich neue Fluggesellschaften und zusätzliche Ziele nach Stewart bringen wird, bleibt abzuwarten. Es handelt sich jedoch um den konkretesten Vorstoß seit Jahren, den kommerziellen Flugverkehr am Flughafen wieder auszubauen.

Als langjähriger SWF-Fan hoffe ich natürlich, dass eines Tages sogar wieder eine Direktverbindung nach Europa auf dem Flugplan stehen wird.

🇺🇸 New Push to Bring More Airlines Back to Stewart Airport

With a new initiative, officials from the Port Authority aim to attract additional airlines to the Hudson Valley airport. The goal is to make Stewart more attractive to carriers looking to expand their route networks.

A so-called Minimum Revenue Guarantee (MRG) program is expected to help achieve this. Such programs are commonly used at regional airports across the United States to reduce the financial risk associated with launching new routes. If passenger numbers fall short of expectations during the startup phase, the program helps offset part of the revenue shortfall, giving airlines time to establish the new service in the market.

The objective is to convince airlines that the region can support additional air service and that sufficient demand exists for new routes.

At present, Stewart Airport is served only by Allegiant and Breeze Airways, whose schedules are focused primarily on destinations in Florida. While these services are important for the region, many travelers have long hoped for a broader range of destinations and the return of additional airlines.

For airport enthusiasts, this new initiative marks another chapter in the long history of SWF. Whether the proposed incentive program will actually bring new airlines and destinations to Stewart remains to be seen. However, it represents the most concrete effort in years to expand commercial air service at the airport.

As a longtime SWF fan, I naturally hope that one day we may even see a nonstop route to Europe return to the airport's schedule.

Heute war Eurowings Discover wieder am SWF, Kreuzfahrt-Business. Leider konnte ich zu der Zeit an dem der A330 gelandet ist nicht das Haus verlassen. Den Abflug konnte ich aus der Ferne von meinem Deck aus sehen. Ich hoffe, beim nächsten Turn-Around bin ich etwas dichter dran!

Today, Eurowings Discover was back at SWF for the cruise business. Unfortunately, I couldn’t leave the house at the time the A330 landed. I was able to watch the departure from a distance from my deck. Hopefully, I’ll be a bit closer next time around!

🇩🇪 Als ich meine Liebsten heute am SWF abgeholt habe, sie sind mit PLAY aus Berlin bzw. Reykjavik gelanden, bot sich ein Anblick, den es so bald nicht mehr geben wird. Die Crew des Flugs OG121 vom 11.8.2025 kommt aus dem Terminal und macht sich auf ihren Weg ins Hotel.

Nachdem heute Play's Airbus A320 mit dem Kennzeichen #TF-PPB als Flug #OG121 aus Keflavik (KEF) hier am Stewart International Airport (SWF) auf Landebahn 27 aufgesetzt hat, bleiben nur noch 18 weitere Landungen bevor die Route eingestellt wird.

After Play's Airbus A320, registration TF-PPB, touched down today as flight OG121 from Keflavik (KEF) on runway 27 at Stewart International Airport (SWF), only 18 more landings remain before the route is discontinued.
