Discover, tief über dem Hudson Valley - Discover, Low Over the Hudson Valley

🇺🇸 Discover, Low Over the Hudson Valley — and Why It Deserves to Become a Real Route

Sometimes you just have to look up at the right moment. Today, September 8, 2026, I did exactly that: Discover Airlines 4Y2105, an Airbus A330 registered D-AIKI, departing Stewart (SWF) direct to Frankfurt (FRA) and still climbing low over the Hudson Valley at just 5,700 feet.

This Stewart–Frankfurt run is a rare catch. It only operates a handful of times a year, as a charter ferrying cruise passengers to and from their ships. So catching it feels like a small win. She first appeared over my rooftop, then banked directly overhead close enough for some detail-rich frames before slipping away westward behind the treetops. Still nearly seven hours from Frankfurt.

If you follow the blog, you might remember my post from October 23, 2025, where I wrote about the last Discover ferry flight of the 2025 season. That day I wasn't there in person.

Which brings me to a wish I've been carrying around for a while: I'd love to see Discover fly this route not just as the occasional cruise charter, but as a proper scheduled service, bookable by anyone. A regular direct flight from Stewart to Frankfurt, open to everyone, would be a real gain for the Hudson Valley. The A330 already proves, today, that the route is flyable. Someone would just need the nerve to put it on the timetable for good.

Until then, I'll keep my camera ready and keep hoping that this rare visitor over the Hudson Valley one day becomes a familiar sight.

🇺🇸 Yes, there are still international flights from Germany to SWF

Remember that 2023 article I wrote where I quoted Simple Flying? Back then, they reported that Eurowings Discover was running some “test flights” to Stewart International. Well, that was only half true – maybe they were test runs, but the planes were actually full of passengers.

I already wondered why those flights never showed up in any booking system. Flying four empty A330 turnarounds would hardly make sense, right? Fast-forward to this year: while browsing Flightradar24, I suddenly saw another Discover plane inbound from Frankfurt. That got me curious – why are they back if those 2023 test flights were supposedly “unsuccessful”?

I had asked Discover directly at the time, and they confirmed there were no plans for a FRA–SWF route. So why on earth are they landing here again in 2025?

Turns out, thanks to a flying community on Signal (run by the CFWU podcast hosts), I found out the real story: These flights are actually charters for cruise ships! Since 2023 they’ve been running four round trips each September/October straight into Stewart.

Pretty cool – at least the international terminal gets some use. Since PLAY pulled out, the customs officers here probably started crocheting to pass the time.

I’m hoping to catch one of those A330 landings with my camera in the coming weeks. Unfortunately, the full flight schedule isn’t public on Flightradar24 this year – so for now I just have to check daily if a bird from Frankfurt is heading our way.
