Erinnert ihr euch an den Artikel aus 2023, in dem ich das Portal Simple Flying zitiert habe? Damals hieß es, Eurowings Discover mache „Testflüge“ zum Flughafen Stewart International. Stimmte irgendwie – nur waren die Maschinen gleichzeitig auch voll besetzt.

Schon damals fand ich es merkwürdig, dass man diese Flüge nirgends buchen konnte. Vier Turnarounds mit leeren A330ern? Wohl kaum kosteneffizient. Dieses Jahr habe ich dann zufällig auf Flightradar24 gesehen, dass wieder eine Discover-Maschine aus Frankfurt im Anflug ist – und hab mich gefragt: Was steckt dahinter?

Bei Discover hatte man mir schon 2023 gesagt, dass es keine Linie FRA–SWF geben wird. Warum also tauchen die Vögel trotzdem wieder hier auf?

Die Antwort habe ich aus einer Flieger-Community auf Signal (von den CFWU-Podcast-Hosts): Diese Flüge sind Charter für Kreuzfahrtschiffe! Seit 2023 kommen sie jedes Jahr im September/Oktober für vier Turnarounds nach Newburgh.

Super Sache – so wird das internationale Terminal wenigstens ein bisschen genutzt. Seit PLAY weg ist, haben die Grenzbeamten dort bestimmt schon Häkeln gelernt.

Ich hoffe, dass ich es in den nächsten Wochen mal schaffe, eine Landung des A330 am SWF zu knipsen. Leider ist der Flugplan für dieses Jahr nicht komplett auf Flightradar24 einsehbar – also bleibt mir nur, täglich zu checken, ob ein Vogel aus Frankfurt im Anflug ist.

Remember that 2023 article I wrote where I quoted Simple Flying? Back then, they reported that Eurowings Discover was running some “test flights” to Stewart International. Well, that was only half true – maybe they were test runs, but the planes were actually full of passengers.

I already wondered why those flights never showed up in any booking system. Flying four empty A330 turnarounds would hardly make sense, right? Fast-forward to this year: while browsing Flightradar24, I suddenly saw another Discover plane inbound from Frankfurt. That got me curious – why are they back if those 2023 test flights were supposedly “unsuccessful”?

I had asked Discover directly at the time, and they confirmed there were no plans for a FRA–SWF route. So why on earth are they landing here again in 2025?

Turns out, thanks to a flying community on Signal (run by the CFWU podcast hosts), I found out the real story: These flights are actually charters for cruise ships! Since 2023 they’ve been running four round trips each September/October straight into Stewart.

Pretty cool – at least the international terminal gets some use. Since PLAY pulled out, the customs officers here probably started crocheting to pass the time.

I’m hoping to catch one of those A330 landings with my camera in the coming weeks. Unfortunately, the full flight schedule isn’t public on Flightradar24 this year – so for now I just have to check daily if a bird from Frankfurt is heading our way.

That large addition to its passenger terminal is now sitting empty now that the latest foreign travel, has ended. Play Airlines, which began daily service to Iceland some two years ago, terminated all of its American service with Stewart’s ending early in September.

Am 1. September 2025 ging in Newburgh eine kurze, aber bemerkenswerte Ära zu Ende. PLAY, die isländische Billig-Airline, hatte sich entschieden, sich aus dem US-Markt zurückzuziehen – und an diesem Tag hob zum letzten Mal ein Airbus A320 vom New York Stewart International Airport (SWF) in Richtung Keflavík ab.

Es war die TF-PPB, die diesen Abschiedsflug übernahm. Über drei Jahre lang, seit Juni 2022, hatte PLAY den Flughafen SWF mit Island verbunden und von dort aus die günstige Brücke über den Atlantik nach Europa geschlagen. Für viele Reisende war Stewart eine willkommen unkomplizierte Alternative zu den großen New Yorker Airports – kurze Wege, wenig Trubel und eben jene isländische Verbindung, die man sonst nirgends in dieser Ecke fand.

Was an diesem 1. September noch niemand ahnen konnte: Der Rückzug aus den USA war erst der Anfang vom Ende. Nur wenige Wochen später, am 29. September 2025, stellte PLAY den Betrieb komplett ein. Aus dem Abschied von einem einzelnen Markt wurde das Verschwinden einer ganzen Fluggesellschaft.

Rückblickend hat dieser letzte Start der TF-PPB damit eine ganz eigene Bedeutung bekommen. Es war nicht nur das Ende der SWF-Route, sondern – ohne dass es an jenem Tag jemand wusste – einer der letzten Kapitel in der kurzen Geschichte von PLAY.

Geblieben sind die Erinnerung an eine ungewöhnliche transatlantische Verbindung ab einem kleinen Flughafen im Hudson Valley – und ein paar Flightradar-Screenshots, die diesen letzten Flug für die Nachwelt festhalten.

On September 1, 2025, a short but memorable era came to an end in Newburgh. PLAY, the Icelandic low-cost carrier, had decided to withdraw from the US market — and on that day, an Airbus A320 lifted off from New York Stewart International Airport (SWF) bound for Keflavík for the very last time.

It was TF-PPB that operated this farewell flight. For over three years, since June 2022, PLAY had connected SWF with Iceland, using it as the affordable bridge across the Atlantic toward Europe. For many travelers, Stewart was a refreshingly uncomplicated alternative to New York's major airports — short walks, little hustle, and that Icelandic connection you couldn't find anywhere else in this corner of the region.

What no one could have guessed on that September 1st: the retreat from the US was only the beginning of the end. Just a few weeks later, on September 29, 2025, PLAY ceased operations entirely. What had looked like the departure from a single market turned into the disappearance of an entire airline.

In hindsight, this final takeoff of TF-PPB has taken on a meaning all its own. It wasn't just the end of the SWF route, but — without anyone knowing it at the time — one of the last chapters in PLAY's brief history.

What remains is the memory of an unusual transatlantic link from a small airport in the Hudson Valley — and a handful of Flightradar screenshots that captured this last flight for posterity.

Die Blog-Einträge über New York und das Hudson Valley sind bereits von der Webseite verschwunden,  nur ein Rest im aktuellen Flugplan zeigt, dass Play noch ein paar Mal nach Newburgh kommt und dann Schluss ist. Wobei die Angabe 7/Woche schon nicht mehr stimmt.

Nachdem heute Play's Airbus A320 mit dem Kennzeichen #TF-PPB als Flug #OG121 aus Keflavik (KEF) hier am Stewart International Airport (SWF) auf Landebahn 27 aufgesetzt hat, bleiben nur noch 18 weitere Landungen bevor die Route eingestellt wird.

Heute schreibt Hank Gross in den Mid-Hudson-News, dass der neue Präsident der Metro North bereits eine Studie auf den Weg gebracht hat, den Flughafen Stewart per Bahn besser an New York City anzubinden. Wie ich schon an anderer Stelle geschrieben habe, soll eine Stichstrecke von Salisbury-Mills zum Flughafen neu erstellt werden.

Ich bin mal gespannt, ob ich das noch erlebe. Aus Deutschland kenne ich das Elend mit den Studien ja nur zu gut - da wird viel Geld ausgegeben, Jahre ziehen ins Land, Präsidenten und Regierungen wechseln und am Ende passiert genau nichts.

Today, Hank Gross reports in the Mid-Hudson News that the new president of Metro-North has already initiated a study to improve rail access from New York City to Stewart Airport. As I’ve written elsewhere, a new spur line from Salisbury Mills to the airport is being considered.

I’m curious whether I’ll live to see it happen. Coming from Germany, I know all too well the misery of such studies – a lot of money is spent, years go by, presidents and governments change, and in the end, absolutely nothing happens.
