🇩🇪Die Presse schreibt dieser Tag viel über das Ende der Nordamerikaverbindungen von PLAY. Wobei diese Headline hier es etwas zu dramatisch darstellt - es wird sicherlich keine grosse, zerstörerische Krise in der Luftfahrt auslösen weil am Tag 3 A320 weniger hier landen.

🇺🇸The press is writing a lot these days about the end of PLAY's North American routes. Although this headline is a bit too dramatic – it's certainly not going to trigger a major, destructive crisis in aviation just because three fewer A320s are landing here per day.

Das ist wirklich eine traurige Nachricht: Ab September 2025 wird PLAY keine Flüge mehr in die USA anbieten. Besonders bitter, da gerade erst die Petition für mehr Flugverkehr am SWF gestartet wurde – und nun erreichen uns diese schlechten Neuigkeiten aus Reykjavik.

Game over: PLAY to stop flying to the U.S. 

This is truly disappointing news: Starting in September 2025, PLAY will no longer offer flights to the U.S. Especially frustrating considering the recent petition calling for more air traffic at SWF—only to be met with this unfortunate update from Reykjavik.

Jemand hat ein Petition gestartet um Stimmen zu sammeln die das Interesse zeigen, SWF als Ausgangspunkt zum Reisen zu nutzen. Die grossen New Yorker Flughäfen sind nicht nur überlastet, es ist auch eine weite und stressige Anreise von hier bis zum JFK oder EWR. Und wenn man dann mal da ist, zahlt man teurer Parkhausgebühren um sein Auto da stehen zu lassen.

Es findet derzeit ein wenig Verkehr am SWF statt - etwa 5x pro Woche fliegt FLYPLAY von hier nach Reykjavik (KEF) um von dort aus für die, die nicht auf Island bleiben wollen, Anschlüsse nach ganz Europa anzubieten.

Breeze und Allegian Air bringen einen mehrmals pro Woche nach Floria oder Sout Carolina. Aber das war es auch schon.

Den letzten grossen Boom erlebte SWF um 2017 herum, als NORWEGIAN von hier mehrer Ziele in Irland und Grossbrittanien ansteuerte und zu Spitzenzeiten sogar zwei Flüge täglich nach Dublin im Programm hatte! Leider hat die Boeing 737-MAX Krise hier die Airline zum Aufgeben gezwungen.

Letztendlich kam Covid und seither sind auch die letzten grossen Carrier wie Jetblue, Delta und United von hier verschwunden.

Zurueck zum Thema, mit den Problemen die EWR im Moment mit der Flugsicherung hat und auch den, wie gesagt, ueberlasteten Flughaefen um New York City, wurde diese Petion...

 ... ins Leben gerufen. Dass ich die unterzeichne ist ein "no-brainer", da SWF ein für mich sehr bequem zu erreichender Flughafen ist, und ich kein Interesse habe via JFK oder EWR zu reisen. Zu viele Menschen :)

Someone started a petition to gather signatures showing interest in using SWF as a starting point for travel. The major New York airports are not only overcrowded, but getting to JFK or EWR from here is also a long and stressful journey. And once you're there, you end up paying high parking fees just to leave your car.

There is currently a small amount of traffic at SWF – about five times a week, FLYPLAY flies from here to Reykjavik (KEF), offering connections from there to all over Europe for those who don’t want to stay in Iceland.

Breeze and Allegiant Air fly several times a week to Florida or South Carolina. But that’s about it.

SWF experienced its last big boom around 2017, when NORWEGIAN flew to several destinations in Ireland and Great Britain from here, even offering up to two daily flights to Dublin at its peak! Unfortunately, the Boeing 737 MAX crisis forced the airline to shut down operations here.

Then came COVID, and since then, the last major carriers like JetBlue, Delta, and United have also disappeared from the airport.

Back to the topic: with the current air traffic control issues at EWR and the already overcrowded airports around New York City, this petition was...

...launched. Signing it is a no-brainer for me, since SWF is a very conveniently accessible airport for me, and I have no interest in traveling via JFK or EWR. Too many people :) 

Was ist denn nun mit Eurowings Discover? - So what’s going on with Eurowings Discover?

🇩🇪 Was ist denn nun mit Eurowings Discover?

Die Airline hat sich inzwischen zu nur "Discover" umbenannt, aber egal - ich wollte mal wissen was denn aus den Testflügen geworden ist und ob es Pläne gibt, die Route fest ins Programm aufzunehmen. Über Social-Media habe ich Kontakt zu Discover aufgenommen und gefragt.

 

Leider gab es auf die erste Anfrage keine Antwort mehr, aber auf mein Nachhaken im März wurde mir dann gesagt, dass SWF nicht permanent angeflogen werden wird. Schade. 

 

🇺🇸 So what’s going on with Eurowings Discover?

The airline has since rebranded to just “Discover,” but anyway—I wanted to find out what became of the test flights and whether there are any plans to make the route a permanent part of the schedule. I reached out to Discover via social media to ask.

Unfortunately, there was no response to my initial inquiry, but when I followed up in March, I was told that SWF will not be served on a permanent basis. Too bad.

In einer Pressemittelung teilt PLAY mit, dass sie ihr Business Modell ändern. Der Fokus liegt nun auf den Verbindungen von Island nach Europa. Das Nordamerika-Geschäft hat die Erwartungen nicht erfüllt. Man spricht zwar (noch?) nicht von einer Einstellung der Linien, wohl aber von einer deutlichen Reduzierung.

Ich persönlich wäre ja auch mit 2 Flügen pro Woche vom SWF nach Keflavik einverstanden, solange ich JFK oder EWR meiden kann!

🇺🇸 PLAY plans to offer fewer flights to North America

In a press release, PLAY announced that it is changing its business model. The focus will now be on routes from Iceland to Europe. The North American market has not met expectations. While they’re not (yet?) talking about canceling those routes entirely, they are planning a significant reduction.

Personally, I’d be fine with just two flights a week from SWF to Keflavík — as long as I can avoid JFK or EWR!

Nur gut ein Jahr nach dem Ausbau ihres Angebots hat Frontier Airlines am 2. Juli 2023 sämtliche Flüge ab dem New York Stewart International Airport (SWF) dauerhaft eingestellt. Als letzte Verbindung fiel die Nonstop-Strecke nach Orlando (MCO) weg – damit endet die knapp zweijährige Präsenz der Airline am Flughafen. Für Reisende im südlichen Hudson Valley bedeutet das den Verlust einer günstigen Direktverbindung in den Süden.

Little more than a year after expanding its schedule, Frontier Airlines permanently ended all operations at New York Stewart International Airport (SWF) on July 2, 2023. The last route to go was the nonstop service to Orlando (MCO), bringing the carrier's not-quite-two-year presence at the airport to a close. For travelers across the southern Hudson Valley, it means the loss of an affordable direct link to the South.

Eurowings testet SWF - Eurowings is testing SWF

Eurowings Discover will touch down at New York Stewart International Airport (SWF), some 90 minutes north of Manhattan (67 miles). According to Aeroroutes, the low-cost division of European behemoth Lufthansa is using the services to Stewart from Frankfurt to gauge the market and consider operating the flights long-term. Currently, the carrier is reported to work four rotations to the New York alternative airport. [read complere article]

🇩🇪 Eurowings testet SWF

Dem Portal simpleflying.com zufolge will der Deutsche Ferienflieger "Eurowings Discover" SWF eine Chance geben. Dazu finden zunächst 4 Testflüge statt. Die sind für den 23.September, 7.October, 17.Oktober und 26.Otober geplant. Geflogen werden soll mit einem A330-300. Ich bin sehr gespannt, ob sich hier eine neue Reisemöglichkeit von SWF nach Frankfurt ergibt. Ich würde es sehr begrüssen!

 

🇺🇸 Eurowings is testing SWF

According to the portal simpleflying.com, the German leisure airline "Eurowings Discover" wants to give SWF a chance. Four test flights are planned initially, scheduled for September 23, October 7, October 17, and October 26. The flights are to be operated with an A330-300. I'm very curious to see whether this could lead to a new travel option from SWF to Frankfurt. I would certainly welcome it!
